Bifocal lenses contain two optical powers to accommodate clear vision for both near and far. The top section corrects distance (myopia, hyperopia, and or astigmatism). The bottom corrects near vision (presbyopia).
People with refractive errors, which is when the shape of the eye disrupts light signals to the retina, need eyeglasses to help them see clearly. Bifocal lenses work by bending light to focus correctly on the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye).
While all bifocal glasses function similarly and carry the same benefits, the visible line segment varies in style and appearance.
Bifocal lenses contain two optical powers to accommodate clear vision for both near and far. The top section corrects distance (myopia, hyperopia, and or astigmatism). The bottom corrects near vision (presbyopia).
The different types of bifocal lenses include:
Progressive lenses are also called no-line bifocals. Without visible lines on the lens you have a smooth transition from distance, intermediate and near vision instead of just two areas as in the bifocal distance and near.
Progressive lenses offer vision that “progresses” in power from top to bottom providing the most natural eye correction.
With bifocal or progressive lenses you can see far and near. However, bifocal lenses only provide distance and near correction and the line of the bifocal is evident. Progressive lenses provide seamless no-line design that offers distance, intermediate and near vision.
Sometime after age 40, you will begin to notice the symptoms of presbyopia. If you already wear prescription glasses, this generally means you will need to begin wearing multi focal lenses to see clearly at all distances.
If you want to wear a multifocal lens without visible lines, progressive lenses usually are your best choice. It provide wider lens area for reading and computer work.
It is advisable to consider your lifestyle, vision requirement for work and personal preferences before choosing between bifocal and progressive lenses.
